Peter Grenader, a former student of John's from Birmingham High School, remained his friend for many years afterward. It was Peter's idea to establish this fund and he discussed this with both John and the LACHSA Foundation Executive Director, Kathleen Ulinski. She felt it was an ideal way to keep John's memory and tradition alive for the students and the fund was officially endowed in December of 2002.
